Debian is my Linux distro of choice. I first started using it sometime around 2003, but switched to Ubuntu for several years because I became frustrated with the age of the packages in it’s repository. Going back to Debian has made me appreciate it much more than I did before, several years of fixed versions with security updates means that I can write software and mostly forget about it until the next release.

I realise now that the ‘Stable’ part of Debian Stable means more than it shouldn’t crash, it’s a stable platform to build on that doesn’t get a new release until everything is in place. The latest versions of software might have the latest features, but they also have the latest bugs and library incompatibilities.

The only bug I’ve found of any note is kdenlive not honouring the $DISPLAY environment variable. The code around the bug has been refactored quite a lot upstream to work with the latest KDE version, but it’s still affected.
