Games I've Completed

killer7 was originally a GameCube and PlayStation 2 game released by Capcom in 2005. I played it back then, but got stuck in the theme park level. It’s since been ported to Windows, and plays brilliantly on the Steam Deck. When the game was released it looked and played unlike anything else, and although it is still an unusual game it stylistically fits in well with a lot of modern indie games.

The game plays like an updated rails shooter, with you holding a button to move forward. You then stop when you hear enemies and enter a first person mode to shoot them, ideally hitting weak spots to get more blood out of them for character upgrades. You can choose paths though, and backtrack on yourself. The game also features simple puzzles a little like Resident Evil.

The story involves conspiracies, ghosts, assassins, and demons. I think there’s a lot more happening in it than people at the time gave it credit for. I seem to remember people just talking about it as if it was weird, but it actually has interesting things to say. The presentation is incredible, it has such a unique atmosphere and sense of style. I wish there were more games that used this as a direct influence, both for its presentation as well as its gameplay.

Gameplay: a man in a black suit and red tie with a pistol walks down a corridor of lockers

A figure in a red bodysuit leans forward, finger to lips: 'In the name of Harman...'

A face peers out of a small yellow locker: 'Tee hee! (*⌒▽⌒*)'

Two blood-spattered men in close-up, one missing the top of his head and the other with his brain showing: 'Our voices will never be heard.'

A grey-haired man in a suit outside a building at night: 'You can't become the president without getting a little crazy.'

A man stands hunched inside an open locker: 'Straight up, this place is whack!'

A man in a vest with Beirut written on it crouches on a ledge: 'I'll be waiting for you with a grin as wide as the truth.'

A man in a tan jacket looks down: 'Has a dying country ever created anything worth its salt?'

A small figure with glowing eyes in a striped shirt: 'Hah hah hah hah hah hah'

A man in a dark suit with glowing green eyes stands on a staircase holding a briefcase

Blood-red Japanese brush lettering with the subtitle: 'Japan, destroyed in 2014 in an attack by the United States.'

The end credits, white serif text on black: 'Written, Designed, and Directed by SUDA 51'

The game's final screen: 'THE END' in white, dripping letters on black
