Final Fantasy III

Games I've Completed

I finished the Pixel Remaster version of Final Fantasy III. This was the only single-player mainline game in the series that I hadn’t already completed.

This is the first game in the series that features summons, and so the first game that features Ifrit, Shiva, Odin, and Ramuh among others. It was also the first game in the series to feature a job system which allows you to change your class whenever you like. It’s much simpler than the system in V, in that you don’t learn abilities that transfer and so you cannot mix and match. It is also happier to force you to use specific classes for certain dungeons or bosses unlike in V where you are more encouraged to play around and you can usually find a strategy no matter what your party setup is.

I still don’t really understand the job leveling system in this game, AP points to level up jobs are hidden and I’m not really sure what gaining levels gives you.

This game is a lot closer in style to the original than its nearest entries II and IV. Those games focus a lot more on story and have no class system. Or at least, the characters you play as are named and their class is a part of the character.

The story is pretty simplistic: there is an evil sorcerer, Xande who is trying to use the power of the crystals for his own end. There’s an ancient race of people whose civilisation has come to an end. It’s all light hearted Saturday morning cartoon stuff. You occasionally gain companions that will follow you around and you can chat to like Cid who, as is tradition, helps you get your airship.
