I was obsessed with this game before release, I was reading up on Internet forums about it when it was going to be on the Nintendo 64. The director of the game was on a lot of forums answering questions and doing interviews. It released for the GameCube in the end, after being delayed several times.
The story is heavily inspired by H.P. Lovecraft, it is about ancient unknowable creatures trying to destroy or enslave humanity. It features twelve playable characters which are placed over around two thousand years of history. Your characters can lose sanity as you play the game, and the game itself can start playing around with you. There are sanity effects such as pretending your memory card is corrupt, or that the TV has just muted. Some of these are very effective.
I remember being incredibly impressed with the acting when I originally played it and though it mostly holds up, it can be very hammy and over the top. It’s still significantly better than most of the games from the time though.
