Phantasy Star IV

Games I've Completed

This is a megadrive RPG, the third sequel to the game I played in 2018. I’ve never played II or III, but this one is apparently considered to be the best in the series. It’s set a long time after the events of the first game, where the characters in that have become legends.

The game has a huge amount of style: the intro is incredibly dramatic, the music is excellent and the story is told through comic book style panels that overlap each other one by one.

The random battles felt far too frequent, every few steps I was getting into a fight and it made it hard to keep track of where I was in a dungeon. The battles themselves were quick and well done though. The game has a macro system that allows you to setup a move for each character and save it in a list to use.

There are a lot of characters that join you along the way, and for the time they have a large amount of personality. The Dezolis priest in particular was very funny.

I was surprised just how clearly it sets up Phantasy Star Online, there is a story sequence in the game that talks about the ships that escaped the destruction of the planet Palma drifting off into space.
