This is a very pretty Metroidvania. You play a small forest spirit, exploring and fighting monsters. Your parental figure dies near the start, which causes you to head off into the world and try to restore the forest to how it used to be.
At first I was pretty frustrated by the floaty jump. It reminded me of Little Big Planet, where you jump high but spend quite a lot of time at the top of the arc. I guess because you are playing as a small ethereal creature they designed it to feel weightless. This definitely is the case, but it made traversal feel cumbersome and fiddly. After a while though I did start getting the hang of the movement, and as you progress through the game you acquire a handful of new movement skills that I found made it much more fun. One skill in particular gives you the ability to fling yourself using any enemies and projectiles nearby. You can also use the skill to fling them around, using them to solve puzzles or defeat monsters.
The game is very eager to kill you at any opportunity. Even near the end of the game with a very large health bar the level designs include lots of dangers that can kill you in one hit. Often they’re not very clearly signposted until you’ve died either, in particular large stone blocks that come down and crush you like Thwomps in Mario. At least in Mario Thwomps are very obvious so that you get a chance to react to them beforehand.
I’ve played a few Metroidvanias recently, Astalon and Metroid Prime 4 in particular. I preferred both of those games to this one, especially Astalon which I realise like more the more I think back on it.
