Quake Mission Pack 1: Scourge of Armagon

Games I've completed, Quake

Scourge of Armagon is the first mission pack for the original Quake. It features some new enemies and a few new weapons. Most are not particularly interesting such as a laser gun, or a ball that floats towards you and explodes. You do get Mjolnir though, a giant hammer that causes lighting to hit your enemies. That one can be a lot of fun. There is a gremlin enemy as well that can steal your active weapon, or spawn more of themselves by eating the corpses which litter the level. That’s a very interesting idea for an enemy, but they’re so weak that I never really saw either happen.

The pack has a more coherent story, and the levels themselves represent more realistic spaces than the abstract mazes of the main game. For instance one level is based around an abandoned mine, with you exploring the overground works, and delving into the underground tunnels. It features a rock tumbler that you have to make your way through, as well as explosions that open up mine tunnels.

I very much enjoyed this mission pack, I thought the levels were well designed and varied. It was always clear where I had to go, and it put up a decent challenge. There were a few too many instances of enemies getting spawned behind you, but it wasn’t enough to detract from the mostly well considered placement.
