Quake Mission Pack 2: Dissolution of Eternity

Games I've Completed, Quake

Dissolution of Eternity is the second mission pack for the original Quake. This one has two episodes, and after the first one I thought it was pretty boring. The new weapons were just overpowered versions of the originals and the levels weren’t doing anything as interesting as mission pack 1.

The second episode was much more interesting, you travel through different time periods. It feels almost like you’re playing a Tomb Raider FPS. There are levels in Greece with statues coming alive to attack you, and in Egypt with Osiris and pyramids. The new weapons did make everything reasonably easy though, right up until the final boss. You fight a flying dragon in a cave with pools of lava. It has a crazy amount of health, and its attacks throw you around. It’s difficult to avoid dying in the lava. I found myself in a secluded spot waiting for it to fly away from me, then unloading multi-rockets into its back.

Overall I’m glad I played this. I still think I prefer Scourge and the original Quake levels, but it definitely has its own ideas. I suspect if they had more time this could have become something quite special.
