A Libertarian Walks into a Bear - Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling

Books I've Read

I read this one on a flight to Hong Kong. This is a non-fiction book about a group of libertarians who decide to all move into a particular town and try to collectively get their ideas adopted in it’s running. They believe that the government, other than in it’s most core functions such as national defense is a tyranny. They refuse to pay any taxes viewing it as theft, and think nealy all regulations and laws should be repealed. They seem to believe that when they achieve this people will be truly free and come together collectively to build a kind of utopia.

These people are fucking idiots.

Just the fact that they realised they had to choose an existing town rather than found one from scratch because they needed the existing infrastructure I think should have caused some kind of awakening.

They get the funding for the fire department slashed, and lo and behold one of their buildings (which they’ve refused to pay tax on) is burned to the ground with someone inside.

The area is inhabited by bears. In other areas people have been made to purchase bins that stop bears from rummaging in their contents. They also call organisations to report sightings, and have come together to deal with bears that wander into town. Not efficiently, not perfectly, but it didn’t lead to townspeople getting mauled.
