Mina the Hollower

Games I've completed

This is the first game I played on my new Steam Machine. It’s the new game by Yacht Club, the team which created Shovel Knight. In it you play as a mouse called Mina who arrives at the start of the game by ship to an island where she had previously built generators that provide electricity to the inhabitants. These generators have broken down, and she plans to go to each and fix them.

The story and characters are well done, there are so many surprising creatures and people you meet. The whole game feels very packed in, extremely dense. Every screen has something interesting happening. It reminds me quite a lot of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on the Game Boy.

Mina can can burrow underground for a few seconds when you hold down the jump button after you have landed. This is useful in fighting to get away from attacks, as well as in traversal. There are small gaps under walls which you can burrow under, as well as glass platforms which you can burrow through.

The game is very hard, there are a handful of bosses which I must have died to over 30 times! I managed to upgrade all of Mina’s stats to maximum by the end, and I still struggled with the ending. It always felt fair though, I knew what I had to do, it just expected a lot of me. The ending cutscene is really quite bleak, you are not a hero that the town is celebrating. They view you as someone who came and destroyed everything, and you only just managed to escape.
