I found the first sequel to Dune to be a big let down. The majority of the book is people just explaining the plot to each other, with most of the characters behaving nothing like they did in the first book. I get that a lot of this is intentional, Paul is frozen by destiny, he is struggling to make any choice at all because he is trying to avoid disasters he is foreseeing. The disasters are actually happening though, billions are dying in a jihad.
There are plots to kill Paul including giving him as a gift the reanimated corpse of Duncan Idaho, now called Hayt and programmed to kill him. Hayt is struggling throughout the book, wanting to reclaim his lost self and memories but confused. In fact several of the characters struggle with who they are, Paul’s sister Alia says that she wishes she did not have the consciousness of the previous reverend mothers within her.
Near the end of the novel there is finally some interesting actions that happen, though it all ends quite abruptly. Chani dies off screen giving birth to twins who appear to have Paul’s foresight, he and Alia in fact lose theirs as they are born. Paul ends up suicidally walking into the desert at the end.
